How an overnight call works

1

Call at any hour

A person answers overnight. Describe the pain, swelling or injury and where you are.

2

Triage on the phone

If swelling threatens breathing or swallowing, or bleeding will not stop, you are sent to the ER. Otherwise we look for an open clinic.

3

Earliest slot booked

Some cities have overnight or on-call dentists. Elsewhere you get the first morning slot plus advice to get through the night.

Are there really dentists open 24 hours?
True round-the-clock dental offices are rare. What exists is a mix of late-evening clinics, on-call dentists who open for emergencies, and hospital dental departments in some cities. The helpline knows which apply near you.
What happens if I call at 2 a.m.?
The operator checks for an on-call dentist in your area. If none is available, you are booked for the first morning slot and told how to manage pain, swelling or bleeding until then.
Should I go to the ER for tooth pain at night?
Only for swelling that affects breathing or swallowing, uncontrolled bleeding, or a suspected jaw fracture. For other dental pain the ER can give antibiotics and pain relief but cannot treat the tooth.
Do after-hours dentists charge more?
On-call visits often carry an after-hours fee on top of the treatment cost. It is stated before you agree to the appointment.
Can I get a prescription tonight?
Only after a dentist examines you. Nobody can prescribe over the phone. Getting you in front of a dentist quickly is the point of the helpline.
